Just Zilch Volunteering

Just Zilch in Palmerston North is a food rescue store - they’ve saved nearly 2.43 million food items from going to waste, and provided them to families in need.

Nadia Healey, a Social and Community Services student at UCOL, is proud to be one of their volunteers. She helps with picking up food from businesses around the region, as well as serving customers who come to collect food packages.

Nadia says she enjoys volunteering and helping the community members who can really benefit from her help. It has helped her learn how to work for people in need and has set her up with the skills she needs to take into the industry.

“I wasn’t really sympathetic beforehand. However, working at Just Zilch with a range of different people has really taught me how to understand and sympathise with people who are in need,” says Nadia.

“During the Covid-19 lockdown period, it was very busy - we had access to lots of fresh fruit and food from local businesses to give out, and it was so nice to feel the appreciation from everyone.”
