Robertson Holden International Speedway

UCOL’s Panel and Paint students have had a partnership with Robertson Holden International Speedway for four years. The students spend their year working towards a common goal - getting five cars ready to race in the Demolition Derby at Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North.

For New Zealand Certificate in Collision Repair and Automotive Refinishing. this event is a major part of the students’ assessments. Phil Oswald, who has been an automotive lecturer for 21 years, is enthusiastic about the benefits of the Derby for current and prospective students.

“The event really gets the name out there for UCOL Panel and Paint and Automotive. It’s a good thing all round. Plus it’s great to be a part of the Speedway community that means so much to Manawatū.”

Following the race, the cars are crushed and sold for scrap. The proceeds go to back to Speedway, who in turn donate another collection of cars for refurbishing and racing.
